USU-Japan's Muroran Institute Cooperates on AI Development

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology as part of its flagship internationalization program. To realize this program, USU collaborated with one of the leading campuses in Japan, Muroran Institute of Technology.

USU Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos, M..Si, directly led a delegation from USU to discuss the cooperation program that will be carried out. It is known that cooperation with the Muroran Institute of Technology has been carried out since 2013.

"Muroran is currently also developing technology related to earthquake handling and prevention as well as the development of artificial intelligence (AI). This is in line with USU's internationalization programs, so it will be very good if the long-standing cooperation can be further developed," said the rector during his visit to the Muroran Institute, Tuesday (10/10/2023).

Prof Mury explained that USU plans to increase the number of student exchanges, especially for doctoral programs. In addition, there will also be the opening of joint classes filled by USU and Muroran lecturers.

"Another program is joint-research with the shared-funding method from Japan. These cooperation programs are expected to further boost USU's reputation in the world of international education and can strengthen the internationalization program launched," he said.

President of Muroran Institute of Technology Kuga Yoshizaku who welcomed the USU delegation said he was happy to be able to increase cooperation with USU. He said the cooperation with USU had been going well and it would be great if it could be further developed.

"We are indeed developing artificial intelligence, especially in the field of food, Muroran itself is working with 52 universities from 22 different countries to develop international academic exchange agreements, of which USU is one of them. We introduce the Japanese-culture study-tour program to introduce Japanese culture with an internship program for 14 days to 6 months," he said.

The USU meeting with the Muroran Institute itself reached several cooperation agreements, including that Muroran lecturers will come to USU to teach. Some of the collaborated studies are disaster management, computer science, agriculture and engineering.

On this occasion, the USU Chancellor who was accompanied by the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Human Resources, Muhammad Arifin Nasution, SSos, MSP, Head of the Priority Program Evaluation Agency Ikhsan Siregar, ST, MEng and Director of Internationalization and Global Partnerships Prof Dr Eng Himsar Ambarita, ST, MT also met with USU students at the Muroran Institute.

The students welcomed USU's internationalization program and supported the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) program to conduct further research with universities abroad. They also suggested that USU create more collaborative programs such as double degrees or sandwich programs.

For information, USU under the leadership of Rector Prof. Muryanto Amin is expanding cooperation to collaborate with universities of international reputation. Apart from universities in Asia, USU has also collaborated with several universities in Europe, America and the Middle East.
